The two leaders also exchanged views on the current situation in West Asia and regional peace. Hasan stated that the new immigration policies recently implemented by the British government are disproportionately affecting Indian students, professionals, and workers.
He pointed out that the narrowing of the list of eligible occupations under the Skilled Worker Visa has excluded a large number of medium-skilled jobs, thereby reducing employment opportunities for Indian youth.
Hasan also noted that the reduction in the duration of the Graduate Visa (post-study work visa) has shortened the time available for Indian students to secure employment after completing their studies, a move that could adversely impact the futures of thousands of students.
Hasan described the hikes in immigration fees, the Immigration Skills Charge, and other levies as an additional financial burden on Indian families and employers.
He remarked that proposals such as extending the eligibility period for Permanent Residency, raising salary thresholds, and tightening English language requirements could create long-term challenges for the Indian community.
Highlighting the decades-old historical, economic, educational, and cultural ties between India and the UK, he urged the British government to review these policies while taking into account the genuine concerns of the Indian community.
The current situation in West Asia was also discussed during the meeting. Syed Saud Hasan expressed concern to MP Amanda Hack regarding the ongoing developments in Iran and the escalating tensions in the region.
He stated that the initial military action against Iran was not in accordance with international law or the spirit of the UN Charter and had precipitated a severe humanitarian crisis.
Congress leader urged the United Kingdom to adopt a humanitarian approach by promoting peace, dialogue, and diplomatic solutions, and to support the provision of all possible humanitarian aid to the people of Iran within the framework of international law.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Syed Saud Hasan clarified that while the UK's new immigration policies do not personally affect him, they do impact the thousands of Indian students, professionals, and families currently residing in the UK or those intending to move there in the future for education, employment, or business.
He affirmed that he would continue to vigorously raise issues concerning the Indian community at relevant forums. Saud Hasan requested MP Amanda Hack to raise these concerns within the British Parliament and other relevant government platforms, and to strive for practical solutions.
MP Amanda Hack assured him that these issues would be given serious consideration and emphasized the need to further strengthen the robust and positive ties between India and the United Kingdom.
This meeting is viewed as a significant initiative towards effectively raising issues of importance to the Indian community on an international stage and fostering constructive dialogue on global and humanitarian matters.
